A local blog website called “Watching Weldon” posted a recent blurb saying that U.S. Congressman Dave Weldon, the congressional representative for Brevard County, hates workers. Well, that was the title: “Weldon Hates Workers”. It seemed all so straightforward. Until we read the article.
Turns out it was all about the strike by the Machinists Union, IAM 2061, at KSC. United Space Alliance wants to hire workers to replace the strikers. Now, try not to fall asleep Brevardians. We southern folk usually can’t be bothered with this union mumbo-jumbo and would just prefer to listen to our Jimmy Buffett tunes, drink our Pina Coladas, and leave the union drama for our northern friends. But when we have federal money jobs here, it’s all part of the exciting story that makes Brevard so unique. Well, this and some nudist colonies in Playalinda claiming they bring $100 million to Brevard’s economy each year. We’ll save that fairy tale for later.
Back to Weldon. The website goes on to talk about a letter that 23 congressional members sent to United Space Alliance to encourage them to reach an agreement in a timely manner. Supposedly, that’s something you get to do if you get elected to Congress: send letters of encouragement to companies to tell them to be nice to people.
Weldon and Tom Feeney, the other Brevard congressman, didn’t sign the letter. And when Weldon was asked why, his office responded saying that Weldon was not aware of the letter and that they weren’t sure he would have signed it even if he had been made aware of it.
Thus, the website concludes, Dave Weldon “hates” workers. Which probably means you, if you work. Which is a way of saying Weldon hates you.
Of course, all of this is somewhat laughable. The “progressive” website, (which we link to here as we do all relevant, current Brevard-oriented blogs), seems to scour the crumbs from the AP pressroom looking for stuff to make Dave Weldon look bad. While we don’t want to take sides here, we have to wonder about the sensationalism of using rabid words like “hate” when, as it turns out, Weldon didn’t even know about it. Apparently, Tom Feeney doesn’t hate workers, nor do the other 411 members of Congress who did not send the letter.
Of course, as Florida Today pointed out, all 23 members who signed the letter were Democrats. Weldon and Feeney are Republicans. Do the math. One tends to think they probably weren’t invited to that meeting.
At this point, maybe some other congressional members should send out an encouraging note to the Watching Weldon website. And Weldon should not sign it and claim later that he wasn’t aware of it. Then we could conclude, apparently, that Dave Weldon “hates” the Watching Weldon website. Although, we suspect that may already be the case.
